The UC San Francisco-East Bay Department of Surgery (UCSFEB) is physically located on the campus of the Alameda County Medical Center in central Oakland. Although Alameda County Medical Center serves as the "nerve center" for the Department, several other associated hospitals in the area serve as training sites for the UCSFEB Surgical Residency Program and are attended by UCSFEB faculty physicians. These institutions have a combined 2,000-bed capacity, and surgical training at each is supervised by in-house directors of surgical education under the guidance and overall supervision of the UCSFEB Department of Surgery.

Alameda Health System (Highland Hospital) - Oakland

This 235-bed hospital serves an increasingly large indigent population and provides a rich source of experience for surgical residents under the supervision of an experienced and well-trained staff. Alameda Health System is the designated Trauma Center for Northern Alameda County and serves the needs of the patients of the cities of Oakland and Berkeley as well as other adjoining communities. In addition to general surgery and trauma surgery, services provided by the residents and faculty of the UCSFEB program include: Neurosurgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, Vascular Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Urology.

Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - Oakland

This 300-bed tertiary referral center for Kaiser Permanente and teaching hospital is the flagship hospital for the organization, where a high volume of complex surgical cases are managed, including emergency general surgery, colorectal, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery. KP Oakland is also the regional referral center for hepatobiliary surgery and thoracic surgery, drawing patients from as far as California’s Central Valley. Additionally, the Breast Care Center is member of the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer, reflecting the commitment to broad, multidisciplinary care for breast patients.

The Department of Surgery at Kaiser is on the leading edge of new technology in laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and robotic surgery, making this a favorite site for surgical house staff in their clinical rotations, and with the absence of fellows, this experience is tailored to the surgical residents.

Staffed by superb clinicians, many of whom hold Volunteer Clinical Faculty appointments with the University of California, San Francisco, the opportunities for a broad clinical experience for the UCSFEB Residents in General Surgery abound.

Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - Walnut Creek

This large active hospital is located in Contra Costa County and serves a large patient population base. PGY-IV/PGY-V residents rotate to this facility and obtain experience with a large volume of inpatients and outpatients, serving the primary components of general surgery training.

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland

Children's Hospital Oakland is the only dedicated pediatric hospital in Northern California. The neonate, infant, and adolescent patients are treated for a large volume and variety of diseases in this 212-bed facility, located in central Oakland. With a staff of seven pediatric surgeons, Children's Hospital is a major pediatric surgical referral center and serves as the Trauma Center for the East Bay area. In the absence of pediatric surgical fellows, senior-level UCSFEB residents gain wide experience in the surgical management of the young patient.

University of California, San Francisco Medical Center

The UCSF Medical Center has been named among the country’s premier medical institutions. This world-renowned clinical and research center delivers a wide range of patient services and is a quaternary referral center that provides an opportunity for surgery residents to experience subspecialty training. UCSFEB residents gain experience with liver transplantion, critical care, and surgical endocrinology under the supervision of the nation’s experts in the field.

San Francisco VA Medical Center - San Francisco, CA

The Cardiothoracic Surgery rotation, under the direction of Dr. Hubert Kim, is a third-year resident level experience at San Francisco VA Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. There are a large variety of adult surgical procedures and diseases. This is an active teaching program for the residents involving a significant amount of intensive care experience and operative procedures. The teachers are excellent, and opportunities are provided to review relevant clinical material for publication.
