Outstanding Faculty, Unparalleled General Surgery Residency Experience in East Bay's Only Level 1 Trauma Center

The UCSF East-Bay Surgery Program is comprised of faculty from the UCSF Department of Surgery and a general surgery residency program based at Highland Hospital that is among the most competitive and highly sought after in the nation. As a teaching institution, we are passionate about surgical education. We aspire to train the next generation of trauma surgeons and have over fifty outstanding surgical residents — diverse, accomplished and deeply inspired — matched to accessible and supportive surgical faculty. We also have a strong research enterprise emblematic of our role as academic surgeons, bringing scientific discovery to the patient bedside and giving back to the community.

Our faculty are attending surgeons at Alameda Health System-Highland Hospital, the East Bay’s only Adult Level 1 Trauma Center. We provide state-of-the-art emergency and trauma care to the residents of Oakland, Alameda County and the surrounding region. Highland treats more than 2,400 trauma patients a year, most being victims of traffic accidents and falls.
